City of Sunderland College and the North East Regional Smartcard Consortium (NERSC), supported by Diginus Ltd, have embarked upon an exciting e-Learning journey with the roll out of student smart cards. Aimed at making student life more rewarding, and simplifying college administration, the smart card scheme is being delivered as part of the wider NERSC initiative.

NERSC are a consortium of 26 local authorities in the North East of England. The consortium has ambitious plans to deliver a multi application, strongly authenticated, smart card throughout the region. The cards will be used to access local services from both the public and private sectors; encompassing such activities as e-Health, e-Education, and access to sports, leisure and entertainment facilities. The successful City of Sunderland College roll out is the largest example to date, with many thousands of cards already in circulation. NERSC fully intend to be seen as a role model for other English and European regions in their adoption and deployment of these innovative technologies.

The initiative is underpinned by a highly secure digital identity solution using an Open Source Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology. This approach brings low cost yet robust and scalable technical solutions to this traditionally complex and expensive area. The PKI expertise is provided by Diginus Ltd, a leading player in PKI / smart card initiatives in both local government and business.

Other technology partners supporting NERSC include Fujitsu and ActivCard.

Facts and Figures: City of Sunderland College has upwards of 24,000 students and 900 staff. NERSC is a consortium of 26 local authorities in the North East of England.

Our orientation was filled with fun. There were lots of freshie students and parents attended. Supposed to be opening of classes is on monday but the school authorities decided to move it on 15th of June (For 1st year and 2nd year students only). =) Maybe, the A(H1N1) virus case has something to do with it. A foreign student of DLSU was confirmed to be the 22nd victim of A(H1N1) virus and it’s scary, big time! The DLSU classes were suspended till June 14 and students and staff were advised not to raid the malls and other places for ten consecutive days as precautionary measure. Lets all pray that the pandemic will come to an end soon. Take care!

I would be attending the orientation at Remedios T. Romualdez Memorial Schools- Makati Medical Center on wednesday. Since mom can’t come with me, my aunt would be taking her day off from the office. I am quite excited to go because I wanted to see my future Nursing classmates. =) June 8 is opening of classes and there are so many adjustments to do. First, I needed to adjust my sleeping hours. I have been suffering from Insomnia and I sleep late most of the time. But since I needed to wake up early for school starting June 8, I have got no choice but to sleep before 12 midnight. Second, transpo. I have to discover where’s the nearest way going to Makati since I would be coming all the way from Muntinlupa. And last but certainly not the least, I have to cope up with college life. Wish me luck!

I am an upcoming college freshie student this coming school year. Though I know I needed to adjust big time, I am still excited to go to school and learn lots of things. I took up a Nursing course at Makati Medical Center. Before I was accepted, I went through a lot of medical tests that made me kind of hopeless. Why? Because I thought I won’t be accepted as my medical tests failed for several times. I need to come back every week to do the medical examinations over and over again. But God is really good, He answered all my prayers. The medical results were good when I came back two weeks ago. Wuhoo! I am all set and I am very much prepared to face the new chapter of my life. Wish me well!

First day of school and there are lots of things needed to be accomplished before the year ends. I am planning to start my college hunting sometime in August and I know that isn’t so easy. As early as April, I have started reviewing for college entrance exams that’s why I feel pretty much prepared for everything. I will be taking up B.S Nursing and hopefully, in God’s will, I’ll pass the exam with flying colors in my top choice of school, UST.

This book was a Christmas present from my dear sister. A girl’s guide to college is very inspirational and helpful in terms of giving you tips on how to survive college life. 1 year to go before I finally welcome the life of being a “kolehiyala” and I know there are more challenges in stored for me. For sure, I am going to miss sweet old memories with my high school friends and batch mates but I guess I have to accept the fact that someday we’ll live our own lives, survive college life and finish what we all have started.
